Parrotheads try Knockerball!

Last Sunday, a few Parrot Heads decided to check out the Knockerball fundraiser over at the Cape Carteret Aquatic and Wellness Center. After actively watching a full game, we were advised that we could try it out for $5 for 5 minutes. What a Hoot. Photographer Jeanne LaVana captured the final elimination round (object to push everyone out of the circle and be the last one standing). Ken and Sue Stone, Bobbi Raub, Val and Steven Johnson, Anne Schrott and Carol Lauback braved the taunts and had a blast. Steve Johnson was the big winner. Do think we could do this as a great fundraiser……

From the Margaritaville Blog regarding North Carolina

April 9, 2016

As a traveling musician for 40 years, I played many shows years ago, in many states where you could go to prison for 20 years for smoking a joint. It was a stupid law based on stupid assumptions. Time has fortunately reversed a lot of that way of thinking. But now another stupid law, based on stupid assumptions, has sprung up like kudzu in North Carolina, where we are scheduled to play shows next week in Raleigh and Charlotte.

North Carolina was there for me as a performer in the early days and I have always felt a loyalty to fans there that goes deep. Rightly so, a lot of people are reacting to the stupid law. I happen to believe that the majority of our fans in North Carolina feel the way I do about that law. I am lucky enough to have found a job in the business of fun. These shows were booked and sold out long before the governor signed that stupid law. I am not going to let stupidity or bigotry trump fun for my loyal fans this year. We will be playing in Raleigh and Charlotte next week.

That said, as for the future of shows in North Carolina, it would definitely depend on whether that stupid law is repealed. That is up to the good people of North Carolina and there are many, and I am confident that they will see that the right thing will be done. As Forrest said, “Stupid is as stupid does.”

April Phlocking – Fools: Backwards & Upside Down

The theme for the Phlocking this Friday will be Fools: Backwards & Upside Down!!  That’s right, wear your best Jester attire, put your clothes on totally wrong, or even surprise us with your take on the theme………..

For any questions about this month’s get together, contact Carol Lauback or lauren Ginther, as they are organizing the festivities.  Look out for some fun games with tunes pumpin’ from DJ Rob.  As usual there will be a 50/50 raffle to join and support The Friends of the Library, along with some snacks provided by the Emerald Club.

In addition to the usual club t-shirts being for sale to club members, there will also be awesome EI Parrot Head front license plates available for purchase for $10, so dress up your car as well as yourself!10259150_678023835603917_4992288949202444224_o

St. Pat’s Festival Booth report

1936827_1156575854367256_7267365328745336695_nWith a beautiful day on tap, our Parrot Head booth at the Emerald Isle St. Patrick’s Day Festival was a huge success. Parrot Head volunteers were decked out in St. Pat’s garb as they handed out info, hawked Riff Raff Raffle tickets, took in new members, and generally had a rowdy time. Jimi Crampton and Ken Stone took turns in the Party-on the Parrot suit bringing business into the booth and playing and getting their pictures taken with little kids. We had 18 great gifts to raffle off that were donated by Parrot Heads and supporting local businesses which allowed us to take in donations of $1750 that was all given to charity, the E.I. Fire Dept. to go towards handicapped beach wheelchairs and Protectors of Homeless Pets/the Humane Society. Many thanks to all who helped out and those who contributed to the raffles, and welcome to new members and returning members!

Hoop Pole Creek Cleanup Report

We had 19 Parrot Heads and 2 Parakeets for the morning of March 5th to assist the Coastal Federation with their annual cleanup.  In fact we outnumbered the Federation’s turnout; but no worries, that’s exactly why we were there!  The area was made beautiful again with lots of trash and litter collected.

Some of the crew!

Afterwards, a bunch from the cleanup enjoyed lunch at The Beach Tavern in Atlantic Beach.  A good time was had by all!
