President’s Notes, June 2020

“Every Day is Once in a Lifetime!”

This new song written and performed by Mac McAnally, tenured member of Buffett’s Coral Reefer Band, is a real winner! What a great way to look at life. We’re all experiencing a time in which we expect one thing, but often get something different. Sometimes it’s hard to appreciate our current circumstances when it’s not at all what we envisioned. However, today only happens once in a lifetime, so why not make the best of it? We won’t have the opportunity ever again!

This thought comes to mind when our club events are carefully planned and only days later cancelled or postponed. We ask, when can we phlock? When can we play together? When can we work together? Although we don’t have the answers, these facts remain clear. We’re still here, we still have each other, and we’re still trying! Every day is a once in a lifetime experience and when we get that one day when the stars are aligned and it all goes as planned, it will be one “whale” of an experience. “Party with a Purpose” remains on our agenda! Hang in there!

Hope you all are doing well and looking after yourselves and others. Remember to Live every moment, Love beyond words, and Laugh every day until we meet again! Jan H., President

2020 PHiP Scholarship Winners Announced

Hello Parrot Heads:

It is the extreme honor of the 2020 PHiP Board of Directors to announce the winners of the 2020 scholarships. We would like to thank our judges for their hard work and efforts in reading each and every application. The applicants had to answer three questions as well as submit a blind essay (Tell us about your leadership skills in your school or community.  Tell us how you plan to continue to apply your leadership skills at the school you are planning to attend).  We received many applications and these fine judges had some very tough decisions to make.

Full congratulations go out to all our applicants and the board wishes each and every one of you good luck with your continued education. It was a very close decision and each of the winners should be very proud of what they do.

The winners of the 2020 scholarships are:

Heather Erlemann, from Cary North Carolina (Parrot Heads Of North Carolina) is the winner of the first place award of $5000.

Laney Phillips from Orr’s Island Maine (PHC Of Maine) is the winner of the second place award of $3000.

Lauren DeFrance from Richmod, Texas (Galveston Bay Parrot Head Club) is the winner of the third place award of $2000.

Again, congratulations to the three winners and thank you to all that applied as well as our judges who took many hours out of their days to help in making this very tough decision.

President’s Notes May 2020

We Have a Lot to Drink About!” Things are beginning to reopen around us, too slow for some and too fast for others. Our reaction will be what we deem the best for ourselves, families and community. Our club experienced many cancellations, postponements, and the hardship of not being together! We’ve had to settle with being in the chicken coup rather than flying with the PHlock! Well, it’s time to “breathe in, breathe out, and move on.”

The Board is in the process of scheduling some really PHun events to help us continue serving our community and surrounding PHriends during these hard times. We are all in this together and we look forward to your support. Bring us your enthusiasm, tropical spirit, desire to help others, love for your environment, and most of all, your willingness to hang in here with us as we move through unfamiliar waters. Let’s all look forward to our future and sail these open seas together!

You will hear more soon, beginning with our monthly newsletter and through our website and Facebook! Hopefully, you will find one or more events in which you feel comfortable and safe to join us. Remember, you decide! If you are not yet a member of this special club and all the benefits that come with it, join us online at www.emeraldisleparrotheads.com. We are here for you through it all as we “Party with a Purpose.” Jan Hicks, Pres.

President’s Notes February 2020

I’m still asked questions about our club so here are some facts I’d like to share.

The Emerald Isle Parrot Head Club (EIPHC) was founded in 2002. We are a nonprofit social organization for people interested in Jimmy Buffett, Trop Rock music and a tropical spirit. Our purpose is to assist in community outreach programs and to provide members with a means of phun and diverse social interaction. We support many charities each year through our events and volunteer hours. Our club serves the Carteret and Onslow County areas and have members throughout the state.

We truly love and support the message of “Party with a Purpose!” There’s a lot of party and a lot of purpose! Our members gather for monthly phlockings where we enjoy music, food, games and participate in a fundraiser such as a 50/50 raffle to benefit designated charities in our area. Throughout the year many other events are held, some large and some small. There are things to do every month. We also volunteer to assist other organizations in the community. Our two main fundraisers each year are the Beach Bike Poker Run held in May and the Island Santa Bar Crawl held in December. These weekends are filled with over 300 participants raising money for kids associated with Semper Fi Fund Kids Camp and Make a Wish, Eastern North Carolina, respectively. Last year these two fundraisers alone brought well over $35,000.

Come join us and have yourself the time of your life while changing the lives of others! As always, visit our website at emeraldisleparrotheads.com to learn more! I’ll see you at the March 6 Phlocking where we’ll “Party with a Purpose!” Jan Hicks, President
