EIPHC MONTHLY PHLOCKING FOR MAY POSTPONED

FIRST FRIDAY PHLOCKING HAS BEEN POSTPONED TO THE SECOND FRIDAY FOR THE MONTH OF MAY   – Matt, who is the new owner of the Emerald Club,   is busy getting all the insurance and permits in place for full operations. So we will not be able to hold our regular PHlocking on the First Friday for this month.  But not to worry, we will still be having the same fun night, just the following Friday instead. Please make every effort to come out on Friday May 13th (what better way to spend Friday the 13th!!)  and support Matt and his new business.  Same theme, same great time to see all your friends.

Beach Bike Poker Run

2016PokerRun16x20

The Parrot Heads’ biggest fund (and fun) raiser of the year is coming up on Saturday May 21:  THE BEACH BICYCLE POKER RUN!  This is an adult only event. All proceeds go to Semper Fi Odyssey Children’s Adventure Camp sending children of wounded/injured Marines and Sailors to camp for a week and then mentoring them throughout the school year; a chance for the community to give a little back to the families who have given so much for us.  Last year we raised $7000 at this event and had 213 riders, and we hope to top that this year.

Registration ($20) begins in the Emerald Club parking lot at 11:30, with DJ-JD (our own “Dr.” John Dyer) playing great tunes, raffle tickets for a variety of prizes donated by local merchants and Parrot Heads will be on sale, as well as logoed event T shirts.  PHolks are encouraged to dress up their bikes and themselves not only for a fun time and good laugh, but to compete for great prizes in this year’s categories: PIRATES, PHINS , & PHEATHERS; judging for this starts at 1:00.  At 2:00 sharp the masses hop on their bicycles and ride to six designated local restaurant/bars to pick up a poker card.  Upon returning to the Emerald Club no later than 5:00, there are cash prizes for the best poker hand; $300- 1st, $200- 2nd, $100- 3rd , some free grub, and awarding raffle winners.  Sela Dubb will be playing that night followed by Mike Mixer.  A rowdy time for a great cause; DON’T MISS IT!!

12565389_1123436471014528_4970024785817018936_nWe had planned a Highway pick up along with the SoundSide litter pick up by boat but DOT and prisoners picked up the trash  along the highway  a week or  so ago.  We will do one later in the spring or early summer instead. The Soundside pick up is still on and Val Johnson has it all organized for those who have signed up.  Thanks to those who volunteered, we will get back with you about a future date!

BIKE THE BANKS! Crystal Coast Lighthouse Century

Saturday, May 7, 2016
8:00 AM
203 Leisure Lane, Emerald Isle, NC 28594 (Rec Center)

Century (100) , 50- and 10-mile rides to attract cyclists of all kinds!

The Emerald Isle Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee will host its 2nd annual Bike the Banks-Crystal Coast Lighthouse Century on Saturday, May 7, as part of the committee’s ongoing effort to promote the area as a one of the top bicycle-riding destinations along the North Carolina coast.

The event will feature three rides of varying length, all beginning at the Emerald Isle Community Center, located at 203 Leisure Lane in Emerald Isle. Cyclists can choose from the “10-mile Fun Cycle” along the bicycle and pedestrian path in Emerald Isle; the “Fort Macon 50-miler” a roundtrip ride to Fort Macon along Highway 58; or the “Crystal Coast Century”, a 100-mile roundtrip to Cape Lookout.  The entry fee for the Fun Cycle is $25. Entry fees for the Fort Macon and Century rides are $40 each.

The purpose of the ride is to promote the Path here in Emerald Isle as well as to showcase our wonderful community and county. We continue to hope that this event will help our local businesses as well since so many of the participating riders come in from other areas. Funds raised from this event will be used to continue expansion and improve the Multi Use Path.

Registered riders will depart toward their desired destinations at 8 a.m. Safety will continue to be a major focal point for the Committee, which has worked in conjunction with area law enforcement to ensure that all three routes will be clearly visible to riders and motorists throughout the ride. Cue sheets will be available for download by mid-April. Rest stops will be present along all routes and each ride will have support and gear (SAG) vehicles on site.

Cyclists should bring their own bikes or plan on renting one. The event is not a race. Cyclists can ride at their own pace. The course will remain open until 3 p.m., after which SAG vehicles will no longer be available. Rest stops will close one hour prior to course closure.

Riders can register by visiting  http://www.active.com/emerald-isle-nc/cycling/races/bike-the-banks-crystal-coast-lighthouse-century-2016 .  All pre-registered riders will receive a free t-shirt at check in. Riders can designate their choice of rides on the registration form. Registration will also be available on the day of the event, though pre-registration is encouraged.

St. Pat’s Festival Booth report

1936827_1156575854367256_7267365328745336695_nWith a beautiful day on tap, our Parrot Head booth at the Emerald Isle St. Patrick’s Day Festival was a huge success. Parrot Head volunteers were decked out in St. Pat’s garb as they handed out info, hawked Riff Raff Raffle tickets, took in new members, and generally had a rowdy time. Jimi Crampton and Ken Stone took turns in the Party-on the Parrot suit bringing business into the booth and playing and getting their pictures taken with little kids. We had 18 great gifts to raffle off that were donated by Parrot Heads and supporting local businesses which allowed us to take in donations of $1750 that was all given to charity, the E.I. Fire Dept. to go towards handicapped beach wheelchairs and Protectors of Homeless Pets/the Humane Society. Many thanks to all who helped out and those who contributed to the raffles, and welcome to new members and returning members!
