An special message from our President….President Holland that is

13179468_1261201930557423_7055670777375314466_nHello all!!! It’s that time again! Our annual beach bike poker run is Saturday May 21st. I can’t tell you how excited I am to see everybody and put on the biggest Poker Run ever to benefit the Semper Fi Odyssey Kids Camp!  I’d like to invite everyone out to the Emerald club Friday, May 20th from 8 to 11 for a special pregame warm-up. One of our favorite local bands, Big Drink will be there playing all our favorite songs. This show, unfortunately, will be different as they recently lost their drummer, Prentice “Jay” Tyndall unexpectedly at age 45. Friday night, Big Drink will be offering their CD’s during the performance for a donation to Jay’s family and Jessi and I will be there running one of our famed 50/50 raffles. The winning ticket will receive half of money raised with the other half going to Jay’s family to help them with expenses. Emerald Club owner Matt Morel  has even arranged to have some food there. I think it’s a great opportunity for us to gear up for Saturday’s event while showing support for our local community. After all, it is what we do best! If you are unable to come out Friday night but still interested in supporting Jay’s family you can contact me directly via email at president@emeraldisleparrotheads.com or call 919-623-0653. I hope to see you Friday and Saturday and I’m looking forward to another awesome poker run. Take care!

EIPHC MONTHLY PHLOCKING FOR MAY POSTPONED

FIRST FRIDAY PHLOCKING HAS BEEN POSTPONED TO THE SECOND FRIDAY FOR THE MONTH OF MAY   – Matt, who is the new owner of the Emerald Club,   is busy getting all the insurance and permits in place for full operations. So we will not be able to hold our regular PHlocking on the First Friday for this month.  But not to worry, we will still be having the same fun night, just the following Friday instead. Please make every effort to come out on Friday May 13th (what better way to spend Friday the 13th!!)  and support Matt and his new business.  Same theme, same great time to see all your friends.

Beach Bike Poker Run

2016PokerRun16x20

The Parrot Heads’ biggest fund (and fun) raiser of the year is coming up on Saturday May 21:  THE BEACH BICYCLE POKER RUN!  This is an adult only event. All proceeds go to Semper Fi Odyssey Children’s Adventure Camp sending children of wounded/injured Marines and Sailors to camp for a week and then mentoring them throughout the school year; a chance for the community to give a little back to the families who have given so much for us.  Last year we raised $7000 at this event and had 213 riders, and we hope to top that this year.

Registration ($20) begins in the Emerald Club parking lot at 11:30, with DJ-JD (our own “Dr.” John Dyer) playing great tunes, raffle tickets for a variety of prizes donated by local merchants and Parrot Heads will be on sale, as well as logoed event T shirts.  PHolks are encouraged to dress up their bikes and themselves not only for a fun time and good laugh, but to compete for great prizes in this year’s categories: PIRATES, PHINS , & PHEATHERS; judging for this starts at 1:00.  At 2:00 sharp the masses hop on their bicycles and ride to six designated local restaurant/bars to pick up a poker card.  Upon returning to the Emerald Club no later than 5:00, there are cash prizes for the best poker hand; $300- 1st, $200- 2nd, $100- 3rd , some free grub, and awarding raffle winners.  Sela Dubb will be playing that night followed by Mike Mixer.  A rowdy time for a great cause; DON’T MISS IT!!

May 2016 Phlocking – Surf’s Up Dude!

Marcia McMahan , Lisa Miller, and Rita Babich are hosting this month’s Phirst Phriday Phlocking with a surf theme.  The festivities will start around 7:00 on May 6th at the Emerald Club.  This month the charity for the 50:50 Raffle will be the Bogue Banks Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation. Come and hang ten with us anticipating fun games including limbo poles, Beach balls and other interesting props!

Parrotheads try Knockerball!

Last Sunday, a few Parrot Heads decided to check out the Knockerball fundraiser over at the Cape Carteret Aquatic and Wellness Center. After actively watching a full game, we were advised that we could try it out for $5 for 5 minutes. What a Hoot. Photographer Jeanne LaVana captured the final elimination round (object to push everyone out of the circle and be the last one standing). Ken and Sue Stone, Bobbi Raub, Val and Steven Johnson, Anne Schrott and Carol Lauback braved the taunts and had a blast. Steve Johnson was the big winner. Do think we could do this as a great fundraiser……

From the Margaritaville Blog regarding North Carolina

April 9, 2016

As a traveling musician for 40 years, I played many shows years ago, in many states where you could go to prison for 20 years for smoking a joint. It was a stupid law based on stupid assumptions. Time has fortunately reversed a lot of that way of thinking. But now another stupid law, based on stupid assumptions, has sprung up like kudzu in North Carolina, where we are scheduled to play shows next week in Raleigh and Charlotte.

North Carolina was there for me as a performer in the early days and I have always felt a loyalty to fans there that goes deep. Rightly so, a lot of people are reacting to the stupid law. I happen to believe that the majority of our fans in North Carolina feel the way I do about that law. I am lucky enough to have found a job in the business of fun. These shows were booked and sold out long before the governor signed that stupid law. I am not going to let stupidity or bigotry trump fun for my loyal fans this year. We will be playing in Raleigh and Charlotte next week.

That said, as for the future of shows in North Carolina, it would definitely depend on whether that stupid law is repealed. That is up to the good people of North Carolina and there are many, and I am confident that they will see that the right thing will be done. As Forrest said, “Stupid is as stupid does.”
